History
was made in this year's Glorney
Cup matches when Ireland
inflicted the first ever defeat
on an English team in this
tournament and a triple tie
resulted between Ireland,
Scotland and England. Perhaps a
slight relaxation of
concentration following two 5-1
victories plus undoubted fatigue
after a long tireing journey and
a double round on the previous
day, found the English players
not at their best, but all
credit to a fighting Irish team
who, as so often in the past,
reserved their best performance
for the final round.
Unfortunatly Mr Glorney was
unable to attend the
prize-giving which followed a
lightning tournament on the
Wednesday evening, but it was
fitting that the chair at the
ceremony was taken by Brother
Somerling, for it was his
efforts that ensured the extreme
comfort of all the competitors
during their stay at St.
Joseph's School for Blind Boys,
Drumcondra, Dublin, where the
matches were played.
On
the third day, the players
relaxed on a coach tour to b~ray
Head laid on by the Irish
Secondary Schools' Chess Union.
The Glorney Cup Committee
held a short meeting at which
approval was given for the
inviting of continental teams
for the 1964 nmatches to be held
in England during the last week
in July. Mr Cassidy in
controlling his first major
event throughly upheld the high
tradition of Irish hospitality.
England, Scotland and
Ireland finished equal with 4
match points each. Game points:
England 12½; Scotland 9½;
Ireland 9; Wales 5. |
